What Paperwork Do You Need to Sell a Car in California?

You’re ready to sell your car. You found a buyer, agreed on a price and are ready to hand over the keys.

But what paperwork do you actually need?

Missing documents can turn what should be a simple California vehicle sale into a frustrating process. Preparing your paperwork before meeting the buyer can help make the transaction smoother for everyone.

California Certificate of Title

The California Certificate of Title is one of the most important documents involved in selling your vehicle.

A valid title establishes ownership and is used to transfer the vehicle from the seller to the buyer.

The seller or applicable lienholder generally signs the title, and the buyer uses the endorsed title to complete the transfer with DMV.

Before selling, check the title carefully.

Make sure the vehicle information is correct and determine whether a lienholder is still listed.

What If You Lost Your Car Title?

A missing title doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t move forward.

California DMV uses the Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227) for situations involving a lost, stolen or damaged title and certain transfers.

The exact requirements can depend on how the vehicle is titled and whether a legal owner or lienholder is involved.

Don’t wait until you’re standing in front of a buyer to discover your title is missing.

Bill of Sale

California DMV provides the Bill of Sale (REG 135).

It records important transaction information, including the buyer, seller, purchase price and date of sale or gift.

Keeping documentation of the transaction is a smart practice for both parties.

Smog Certification

If your vehicle is subject to California’s change-of-ownership Smog Check requirements, the seller is generally responsible for providing the buyer with a valid smog certification.

Not every vehicle requires one, so verify the requirements that apply to your particular vehicle.

Odometer Information

Mileage information may also be required as part of the transfer process.

Write down the vehicle’s mileage at the time of sale and make sure information entered on transfer documents is accurate.

Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability

Your responsibilities don’t necessarily end when the buyer drives away.

California sellers are required to notify DMV of the sale or transfer by submitting a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability within five calendar days.

To complete it, you’ll want information including the buyer’s name and address, vehicle information, odometer reading and date of sale.

Save your submission confirmation.
